Gaza War: Two Years of Devastation and Humanitarian Crisis

Should we really state the facts again, hoping for Third States to finally act to end the genocide in Gaza? Two years into the war, civilians face escalating attacks, repeated displacement orders, and famine. Médecins du Monde teams continue to provide care despite being affected themselves, calling for a ceasefire and unhindered humanitarian access.

A Never-Ending Nightmare

Since October 2023, at least 66,000 Palestinians have been killed and 170,000 injured. Close to 2 million people have been displaced, representing almost the entire population of the strip (9 out of 10). *1
Civilians and hospitals have been systematically targeted, and humanitarian aid is increasingly obstructed. Since the Israeli hubs’ food distribution system began on 27 May, at least 2,340 people seeking assistance have been killed.
*2
Last August, famine was confirmed in Gaza.
*3 Around 455 Palestinians have died of starvation, including 151 children. *4
Meanwhile, Israeli military operations continue advancing toward the total destruction and control of Gaza City.

Médecins du Monde’s Unwavering Commitments

Despite extreme challenges, our 150 Gaza-based staff remain dedicated to supporting affected populations, even when personally at risk. Our clinics and offices have been repeatedly attacked, and our medical personnel have witnessed and suffered many violations of international humanitarian law.
With the forced displacement order covering Gaza City, we had to close our two primary health centers and relocate staff south. Decisions to close or reopen our clinics must now be reconsidered almost daily due to the highly volatile situation.
Yet, by redistributing our resources, we have significantly increased the number of consultations in our operational clinics. Mental health and psychosocial support activities also continue through our local partners, Aisha and Juzoor.
We are doing everything possible to help Palestinians in Gaza: can Third States say the same?

Palestine recognition is not enough: our calls to action to end the genocide

At the 80th United Nations General Assembly in September, several states formally recognized Palestine, including France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta, Andorra, the UK, Canada, Australia, and Portugal. Yet recognition alone cannot stop the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe.
What we have witnessed since October 2023 aligns with the conclusion of the UN commission of inquiry’s report: a genocide is being committed in Gaza.

• We call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and forced displacements, and the establishment of a permanent ceasefire.
• We call for unrestricted humanitarian aid throughout the Gaza Strip.
• We call for Palestinians to be allowed to lead and own their reconstruction plans, in line with their inalienable rights, including the right to self-determination.

While peace negotiations are ongoing, we remind that a permanent ceasefire and unrestricted humanitarian access must not be treated as a bargaining chip: they are unconditional.
How much longer must we wait, and how many more lives will be lost before Third States truly decide to act?
